Making a Claim on your Homeowners Insurance

Category: Our Blog

Do you know what to do if the worst happens and you need to make a claim on your homeowners insurance? MA agents can help you through the process, but there is some basic preparation you can have in place.

Keep your insurance policies, valuation certificates, purchase receipts and photographs of valuables together in a safe place. It is a good idea to have a second set stored elsewhere in case those at home are damaged or destroyed.

In the event of a robbery, call the police straight away. You will need the police report (or at least the report number) for your claim. Also, the sooner police can start investigating, the better the chance that they may be able to track down your stolen items.

A major storm can create havoc, and any damage needs to be contained as soon as it is safe. Photograph the damaged areas as soon as possible so you have an accurate record. In order to minimize any further damage, do what you can to protect the rest of the house. You may need to call a contractor to do some temporary repairs, but at the very least, protective coverings for exposed areas should be installed quickly.

Call your insurance agent as soon as possible. The earlier you submit a claim, the sooner it can be processed. This is particularly important if your loss is due to widespread weather events and there are many people claiming on their homeowners insurance. MA is densely populated and there could be a significant backlog in getting claims through, so the sooner you claim the better.
